- Abstract
For optimization of rod seals it is important to examine the processes taking place in the dynamic sealing contact. Apart from measuring the axial force, the current aim of present day investigations is to obtain details regarding lubricant film thickness and the contact area between the seal and the counterface. Due to this reason a test rig arrangement for optical investigations on rod seals was developed. The results of the investigations carried out on this test rig concern the localization of the sealing contact through a glass rod using white light. By means of the fluorescence method the lubricant film thickness in the localized sealing contact is measured at different pressures and at various sliding speeds. For quantitative use of the fluorescence method a calibration has to be done in advance. The applied calibration method and the results of the investigations are presented.
